CAIRNS Peacefully, at Methven House, Kirkcaldy, on Tuesday, August 7, 2018, Doreen Margaret Cairns, aged 87 years. Younger daughter of David and Lizzie Cairns, sister of Betty Kohler and aunt to Alan, Gordon and Irene. Service at Pathhead Church, Kirkcaldy, Wednesday, August 22, at 11 a.m., to which all family and friends are warmly invited, followed by cremation at Kirkcaldy Crematorium, Rosemount Avenue, Kirkcaldy. Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be given at the Church to Diabetes Scotland Central Fife Group, or by cheque via Crosbie Matthew Funeral Directors, 199 Nicol Street, Kirkcaldy.

Dear Friends,
I am an American friend of Doreen and would like to express my deep sympathy for your loss. My friend and I met Doreen and Janette on a train going north. They were going to a show in Pitlochry and we were on our way for a discovery of Perth for the day. Coincidentally that same day, we happened to meet them on a southbound train quite late at night. They were going back to Kirkcaldy and we were going back to Edinburgh. We instantly knew that we should exchange information and keep in touch with each other. That was several years ago, and my friend Irene and I have continued to return to Kirkcaldy every two years to see our friends.
The last time was in 2017 when we last visited with Doreen.
It will be very, very sad when we visit Janette in 2019 and Doreen will not be there to greet us. She was such a delight---determined and generous as well. Always ready to share her life and her experiences with us. We were impressed with her hiking and walking ability and her enthusiasm for the outdoors. She hosted us for a carry-in fish and chips meal at her house before her health declined and was happy to share family stories and memories with us.
I am sorry that I have lost a great friend who united our two countries even though we were not of the same age. I will remember Doreen's smile and her strong spirit. I loved Doreen and consider that knowing her was a blessed gift in my life.
