It has been a delight to have known Ms Pearl Mitchell for over 30 years. Pearl came to Malaysia for the first time 30 years or so ago. With a stroke of serendipity she was introduced to my aunt, Zohra, who then introduced her to the whole family. Pearl grew very close to my mother Zain and indeed the whole family. Pearl's visits to Kuala Lumpur was something we all looked forward to for the past 30 years. When November came the question often heard was "When does Pearl arrive?". Once she arrived, we would then, with her other Malaysian friends, make appointments to visit her for tea at her hotel room, take her out for a meal or arrange for her to come over to my parents house for the afternoon for a good natter. My sister drove her several times to Morib, a small town by a beach about 50km away from Kuala Lumpur - a place she seemed to enjoy as she mentioned she liked the water. She also enjoyed drives to to view the lush greenery at the nurseries in Sungai Buloh, which was originally set up by a man from Tayport! Earlier on, when she was able, Pearl used to enjoy walks around the city and used to walk from her hotel to the Lake Gardens about 3 kms away - something even us locals never attempted! Pearl was young at heart and was well travelled. She would tell us of her trips and adventures to Nepal, Hong Kong and India and how much she enjoyed work at Dundee University. It was heartwarming for us to know that she treated her friends here as family, and how we too treated her as part of ours. She would in fact, say she was the eldest sister in my mother's family! Every year, just before she would leave Kuala Lumpur to return to Scotland she would host a party at the hotel for her friends to thank everyone for making her feel so welcomed in her adopted city. We only have very fond memories of her and can only think of pleasant times with her. You are dearly missed Pearl. Lina x

To us in Kuala Lumpur, Pearl Mitchell was more than a friend, she was our family member. I remember first meeting her around 30 years ago on one of her earlier annual solo trips to Malaysia. Ever since then, we looked forward to her arrival in Kuala Lumpur every year end - it had been our honour to show her around and make her comfortable in the city she considered her second home. My mother who is 10 years younger than Pearl considered Pearl among her best friends, and likewise Pearl felt the same about my mother. Pearl considered my mother her younger sister and it was priceless to see these two ladies being so warm and kind to each other The relationship we shared with Pearl was indeed something special - We often joked with her about how she was a flirt and that being a blonde helped and at the same time we had deep conversations about the world and life in general, always over a cup of good hot tea. It was beautiful to see the close relationship and mutual respect we shared despite being of different religions and races and living 6.587 miles apart. sadly, in early October, my mother received a call from Pearl where she informed her that doctors would not allow her to travel to Malaysia on her own anymore. This bit of news had left us in tears as we didn't realise it was that serious. We were gutted to hear that she was unwell and so soon after hearing that she had passed away just left us devastated! Dear Pearl, may you rest in eternal peace and please know that we are always thinking of you. I think she knew how much we loved her and that she had a special place in our hearts.. Love, Nanie xx
