Mairi came into my life when I was a young GP in the mid eighties, and she a caring district nurse whom I respected greatly. We've been in touch ever since, through her academic career (she was at the London School of Hygiene in the 90s when I did a masters) and when she returned to Scotland, through the times when her back became more disabling and her move to Dundee. I recall a great birthday I think 40, walk she organised for her friends decades ago through the City of London ending in an East End pub, when I learnt a lot about my city of birth. I visited her at Wishart Archway in late 2019 and met Charlie the cat. She got to know my grandchildren as well and there's her copy of the Broons waiting for the five year old to get old enough to understand it. We'd speak, often once a week, in recent years, and share views of frustration about the politics of the right and destruction of public services, the tragedy of Covid deaths in the nursing home in Skye and more. We'd enjoy reminiscing about the our Highland descent, more recent in her case than mine. I miss her, and know how hard it must have been to be isolated by disability for years and particularly at the time of pandemic. She was fully capable of dissecting what was happening across society. I am sad to have lost her as a friend, but happy to think that she is laid to rest in the Isle of Skye, which she loved so much and I am sure must have wanted. xxx Anna
