A Caring and Listening Doctor, Champion for Young People with Diabetes.

Stephen Greene

Words cannot express my sadness at Ray’s passing. I worked closely with Ray for over thirty years in the area of Diabetes in the Young. As a Specialist in diabetes in children, teenagers and young adults it was a pleasure and privilege to work with Ray and his numerous devoted trainees and consultant colleagues. Under his direction and advice, Tayside fashioned a reputation across the world for excellence in the delivery of care for this condition. Although we had not met up now for several years, since I moved from Scotland, because he played such a big part in my time at Dundee, he will always be in my thoughts. I very much looked up to him as my ‘academic and medical big brother’ and asked for his guidance and advice on frequent occasions. When we met up at the Scottish Study Group, usually in Pitlochry, it was a delight and I believe contributed to the energy of the group based on mutual respect and camaraderie between children’s doctors and adult diabetes specialists that added to the fantastic reputation that Ray developed and led for the care of young people with diabetes. I will miss him.

A kind, caring, intelligent colleague

I worked with Ray from 1987 until his retirement. I was hugely impressed by his tireless fight against diabetes and the dedication with which he provided care to his patients. Always hard working, an excellent sense of humour, intelligent and compassionate he was much missed after he retired. Sincere condolences to his family.
