AMSON (Anstruther) John Ceres Amson, died on March 14, 2023, at home in Anstruther, a month short of his 96th birthday. Senior lecturer in pure mathematics at St Andrews, he was a creative adventurer and innovator in numerous fields such as urban planning, welding in space, the democratic reform of university government and he developed the first ever tidal prediction software for safer navigation. His years as a P.H.D. student in Cambridge led to his cofounding of the International Alternative Natural Philosophy Association. More recently, his research enabled the continuation of Gregory's Meridian Line in St Andrews. John was also a popular commodore of the local sailing club. His warmth, humour and energy inspired so many.
