A Genuinely Good Man.

We first met Alan a few years ago, when his dog Piper was not yet a year old. We walked our madcap gsp and Vizslas daily in the Shell Bay woods near Elie and Alan frequently walked his Bernese Mountain dogs there about the same time of day. Many days Alan was just a figure in the distance, with his huge dogs, however, if we crossed paths we'd stop and have a wee chat, while our boisterous dogs happily played chasing games with his big fellows. Usually we had to each find a tree to shelter behind while the dogs went crashing by, until they had burned off sufficient excess energy and we would part and continue on our respective ways. Sometimes we'd see Alan quite regularly there but at other times many weeks would go by without us meeting, depending on our schedules and routines. When we did meet, we'd always have the quick catch-up chat and over time we got to know more about him and his dogs. The man we got to know was a genuinely good man. Calm, pragmatic, moral, gentle and utterly devoted to his dogs. We are stunned with sadness to learn of his death. He often spoke of his wife Margaret, although we never met actually met her. We can only imagine her loss is immeasureable. We send Margaret and Alan's families our sincerest condolences. He was a fine man who will be truly missed by many fellow dog walkers wandering in these woods.
